In most states, you need a master’s degree in accounting in order to be certified as a CPA. While you can work in accounting without becoming a CPA, this certification undoubtedly will help you earn more money and find a better job. Master’s degree programs can, however, be expensive. Here’s all you need to know about scholarships and grants to help you cover the cost of tuition:
Accounting Scholarships
Scholarships are available to students based on merit. Some scholarships require you to write an essay based on a topic like why you deserve the money or what you plan to do after getting your education. Others require you to maintain a high GPA or have a special skill or talent. At the master’s degree level, you can also find fellowships, which are similar to scholarships, but typically come attached to responsibilities, such as a commitment to serve as a teaching assistant. Scholarships are readily available from schools themselves, as colleges want to attract the best and brightest students to attend, and you can also find accounting scholarships from outside sources. Some of the groups and organizations commonly offering scholarships for accounting students include the American Society of Women Accountants, the Association of Latino Professionals in Finance and Accounting, the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, and the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners.
Accounting Grants
Grants are available to graduate students as well, and these funds are usually given to students who show financial need. As an undergraduate, you might have applied for the Pell Grant, a federal government grant available to all bachelor’s degree student, but as a graduate student, you’ll need to look for other sources of grant money. Like with scholarships, grants are often available directly from colleges, since schools want to ensure that top students can attend, regardless of financial situation. Outside organizations also have grants available for accounting students. You can start you search with the Association of Certified Public Accountants and the National Society of Accountants.
Keep in mind that you can also find student loans to help you cover the cost of tuition. While you do have to repay this money when you graduate, student loans usually have a lower interest rate and can be deferred until you find a job.
